The Lost City

Where once an active volcano rested in one of the most rugged bushveld land in South Africa is where you can find the glitzy and opulent Palace of the Lost City of Sun City.  It’s like a fantasy dream world; as if you stepped into some kind of surreal world where no expense is spared yet the presence of old South Africa prevails.

The Palace of the Lost City is found in the North West of South Africa, in the place known as the Las Vegas of Africa, the Sun City. The Sun City was the idea of South African Sol Kerzner who began his career as an accountant before taking on the family hotel business and turning it into a large conglomerate. His company now owns hotels in South Africa, the U.S., Maldives, the Bahamas, and Dubai.  Sun City was built in 1979 and at that time, it was considered by many as an overly ambitious project – ahead of its time. Four of the hotels in Sun City belong to Kerzner including the 2 golf courses, arena, and entertainment center. The Palace of the Lost City is the most extravagant of all hotels.

Is There A Lost City?

Although the hotel implies that the area was once the site of a lost city, it’s all part of the creative imagination of Kerzner. It was his fantasy world where he discovered a mythical city while riding on a helicopter.

The Palace of the Lost City is incredible. Its architecture is massive with enormous elephants guarding the front façade and a great bridge to a man-made lake where one can find some of the rarest of birds and fishes.

The Palace of the Lost City Hotel

Inside the hotel are hand-crafted furniture, towering columns, and beautiful mosaic floors. You will find yourself in a strange world with fake animal tusks adorning the walls and luscious-looking palm trees. Just outside there is a fake tropical beach with large waves high enough for surfing, soft sand, and refreshing water. Further along are the golf courses designs by Gary Player which borders the Pilanesberg National Park. Imagine playing golf while hearing in the far distance the animal sounds of the Big 5! In fact, for the regular guests, their wild stories of finding a crocodile at the 13th hole actually have a tinge of truth to them since there are such animals living nearby.

Accommodations at the hotel though are modern luxury and include cable TV, room service, toiletries, private bath, mini bar, in room movies, and coffee/tea hot pot. Around the hotel is the swimming pool, Italian restaurant driving range, water sports, squash court, beauty salon, bar, function rooms, a very secure parking lot.

The hotel was renovated less than 9 years ago so it has many of the newer features in technology and security measures installed. It has become a business venue for meetings and conferences but it has also managed to retain its appeal as a family vacation destination.
